Becoming a Deviant

So you want to join deviantart, well there are a few things you should know, and before you become less optimistic calm down it isn't bad. The first thing you should know is that membership is free until you decide you want to pay for a premium membership which will cost you

  • 4.95 a month
  • 7.95 for three months
  • 29.95 for a full years membership

It should also be known that with the three month membership you can choose between a prepaid membership (suggested for rough incomes) or a billed every three months membership. I wouldn't suggested the billed every month membership unless you are sure you will have the money or you are good at remembering these kinds of things.

The second thing you should know is that deviantart is a community website for many things including things that have nothing to do with art. In the forum section of the website you can talk about pretty much anything. In the forum there are also sections for projects you are working on or are willing to help with and a professional area where you can work for or advertise your skills in a pay only environment. There are more sections but I am simply listing the ones that I spend the majority of my time on. Learning your way around the forum is easily at least the second most important thing to know how to do on deviantart. I say this because deviantart is a very well known and very high traffic website and should you post something that doesn't belong in a forum prepare yourself to apologize and tuck your tail between your legs.

The third thing to know is that deviantart is a place for all kinds of art be it, abstract digital, pixel, literature of any kind, fan art, crafts, animation, everything. Deviantart has a very thorough selection of the kind of art you can pick from or add to with your own art. If you are going to be contributing art to deviantart and most people do, you should try to figure out what basic area of design you are using. If you make a picture and it is just random swirls and colors everywhere it would probably be best in an abstract section somewhere. Along with all the art from around the world being submitted there is naturally some art that you most likely won't want your children if you have them or child under 16 if you know them. There are quite a few naked picture of women and men on deviantart and they are usually posted in the "Artistic Nude" section of deviantart. If you are not someone who is interested in seeing this kind of art and let's be clear, it is, kinda art than you can turn on a content filter which will block all images posted to deviantart that has a mature warning attached to it. I'm not saying that there will never be one that does make it to your screen but instead of going to the admins about it please just send a comment to the artist letting them know. Most people on deviantart are nice enough people that they will correct mistakes if given a good enough reason.

The last small bit of knowledge I can give you is how to deal with the actual members of deviantart. The golden rule is always a great rule to live by and on deviantart it is no different. You are better off not getting angry at someone on deviantart because it is very easy to remove things that anger you. By example I had someone who did not "enjoy" my art and made it abundantly clear though it was only once it was a strong enough blow to my moral that I blocked him. I do not know if this means that he could no longer see my art but I do know that I never received another comment from this user. If someone leaves a comment on your profile page and you don't like it for any reason you can block the comment and all anyone will see where the comment was "hidden by owner." It is impossible to find anywhere in the world where everyone is nice but if you ask a question it will be answered and if you ask for pointers they will answered, but if you troll someone you can certainly expect it will be returned. I think these last few words are very important though the turn is very loose and I don't think I'll ever have to worry about it but, Don't....Steal.....Art. Naturally this is looked very badly upon on the website and along with not stealing art you should be told now that if you receive a picture from a friend of something they didn't make and you post it to DA, you will get trolled by many, many people. No one appreciates a copy of a photo of the Mona Lisa, think about it.

So here is a basic recap in case you've skipped to the bottom 1) you don't have to pay to be a deviant. 2) Deviantart is a place for all kinds of art. 3)If you are offended by something there are simply solutions. 4) Follow the golden rule, by a good person on DA and you'll be rewarded.

Stealing is Wrong Remember

That is why the few pictures on here are mine, I made them. If you don't believe me go to zarduck.deviantart.com and I'll tell you there as well. Thank you.
